Hi, I'm Barb. I had a very hard time deciding what I believe about the universe, and the role of a Higher Power in my life.

I had a hard time using the word "God" at first because I didn't believe God had gender (like mountains and clouds).

For a while I used "Godde" because it was halfway between God and Goddess. Now I don't care and I use "God" because it's expedient. But maybe "God" just doesn't work for you. That's ok. As long as you believe there is something, some force, some principle that's more powerful than you, that's all you need. It could be gravity, it could be the process of evolution, it would be nature, the universe, spirals. As long as it's more powerful than you, that's what's required to rely on a Higher Power.

Even though I was spiritual before recovery, it was nothing like it is now. I have a RELATIONSHIP with my Higher Power. I USE God all the time ("Please show me your will and give me the power to carry it out") and I ask God to use me all the time. The ability to turn things over to God has been the single most important part of my recovery. I don't have to be in charge all the time. I used to feel like I had to be in charge. The #1 thing I hand over to my HP is my thoughts. I can't tell you what a relief it is to know I'm not in charge, and there's something out there that has my best interests in mind. Some tips to help you develop a
spirtual life that works for you

I wrote this article about my practice of writing a gratitude journal nightly for 20 years. It laid a great foundation for my spiritual life and it might be helpful to you too.
